When people in Texas are injured in a car accident, they may be inclined to think of the immediate aftermath of their situation: getting a new automobile, paying hospital bills and otherwise getting back to normal as fast as they can. However, when a serious accident occurs, life might never be the same; returning to some semblance of normalcy can take months, if not years.
For one young family, an accident allegedly caused by a suspected drunk driver has irrevocably changed their lives. The family, two parents, a boy and a girl, were en route back to Arlington, Texas, where they had lived until a recent move to Tennessee, for a Thanksgiving visit.
Fortunately, the father and the son walked away from the accident basically unscathed. However, the mother was killed in the crash and the daughter was critically injured. Her survival was in doubt for an extended period of time.
The daughter, 11, was in the hospital for about five months, being released only recently. With a little assistance, she was able to throw out the first pitch at a baseball game in which her brother was playing. She still walks haltingly and gets around mostly in a wheelchair; she will need countless hours of therapy to rebuild her cognitive and social skills.
