Motorcycle Safety Tips

A 37 year old man from Denison died at the scene, when his car collided into a pick-up truck by Highway 75 and Morton street, Monday night.

Chad Clark was declared dead at the scene, a mark of many fatal accidents at the end of this year for motorcyclist in the past few months on the Texoma road.

In October 2013, Jessie Elliot was in a fatal car accident in Sherman.

In August 2013, another motorcyclist died when his bike lost control on Highway 75; not wearing a helmet.

In the state of Texas, motorcyclist are not permitted by law tp wear a helmet, whereas in Oklahoma, riders younger than 18-years-old are required to do so. Motorcyclist enthusiast John Paul says he wears his for safety reasons.

"I have fallen thanks to a truck on a highway and walked away from it because I was wearing the right gear," claimed Paul.

Beginner biker Lycia Lee says she is more concerned about on the road. A motorcyclist can do everything in their power to be prepared and remain aware of their surroundings on the road, but they cannot control the way other drivers behave.

"As a matter of fact, when you talk to other bikers, they'll tell you that's they're biggest concern," Lee.

A teacher at a motor-clothes safety course, Robyn Mathews, works at the Texoma Harley Davidson in Sherman.

Mathews recommends that riders should look for helmets carrying a "DOT" sticker, a symbol that it has been tested and meets the requirement of the Department of Transportation. She also states that motorcyclist should be replacing their helmets once every three years.

"Sometimes an inexpensive item can make all the different in the world and the outcome of your accident and the injuries you sustain," says Mathews.

Mathews advises that drivers of auto-vehicles could be more cautious for motorcyclists, and to give them spaces on roads in case of an accident.

Mathews also advises that bikers should always put on a helmet. Not having the proper gear could be a fatal mistake to make.
