Motorcycle Accident shuts down highway

A motorcyclist was killed while trying to avoid a crash with an 18-wheeler Monday morning on the Northwest Side, San Antonio police said.

The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Northwest Military Highway and the westbound Loop 1604 access road.

The motorcyclist, whose name has not been released yet, was wearing a helmet and appeared to be in his 40s, police said.

The 18-wheeler had a green light and was turning left from Military Highway onto the westbound access road, but did not have a protected green arrow, police said. The motorcyclist was heading the opposite direction on Military and laid down his motorcycle to try to prevent running into the 18-wheeler.

But the man came off the back of the motorcycle and hit his head on the street so hard his helmet was shattered. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the 18-wheeler remained on the scene and was cooperating with police, officials said. It was unclear whether he could face charges. The crash closed Military Drive under Loop 1604 and shut down the westbound Loop 1604 access road for several hours.
