A few tips to road safety during construction are listed below.
1. Know multiple routes
Sometimes construction blocks of certain roads indefinitely, unfortunately sometimes these restricted roads are part of the routes we take on our daily commutes. For this reason it is suggested that you learn more than one pathway to your place of work or school. In the event that the road you take is blocked instead of becoming flustered and disoriented you can calmly take another memorized path.
2. Watch out for signage
Most construction zones place proper signage around to alert you of potential dangers or temporary changes to the area. It is possible that an exit you routinely take has been closed off and you are forced to hastily change lanes without cautioning other drivers. If are aware of construction or road signs you will be prepared for any sudden adjustments you need make. To avoid accidents on the road stay alert for signage in the form of cones, cautionary tape, or road blockades.
3. Listen to news and notifications
Most cities and counties are required to alert residents of big changes such as new toll roads, additional lanes to highways, or the removal of certain roads and streets. Stay up to date on the changes occurring in your area so you can be well prepared for anything you encounter while on the road. Read letters issued by the city, pay attention to signs posted on the side of the highway, and listen to local news and radio stations that may share useful information.
4. Drive slower in work zones
Speeding through work zones can be the cause of serious road accidents. While speeding you may miss signs that alert you of necessary lane changes or request a decrease in speed limits. While barreling down work zones you may also collide with misplaced cones, road blockades, or other objects. Going the speed limit or even below the speed limit in a work zone can prevent potential accidents and protect you and other drives on the road.
4. Follow work zone and construction rules
Ignoring road signs not only places you in danger, but it also endangers other drivers on the road. As tempting as it may be to cut through that closed off shortcut it can end in an accident or injury. Restriction to certain roads and blocked off areas are not implemented to annoy your or make your life difficult, rather they are put in place to keep you safe. Make the job easier by following the directions of all road warnings and abiding by all road signs.
