Two vehicle crash shuts down highway

One man was killed and another is in critical condition after a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 Tuesday afternoon near Orange.

A spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety said 53-year-old Robert William McElveen, of Elmendorf, Texas, was killed while 29-year-old Robert Adam Doiron, of San Antonio, was seriously injured.

Officials said McElveen was driving an 18-wheeler eastbound on I-10 when he came up upon heavy traffic, which was backed up due to a fatal accident earlier in the morning near Vinton.

An eyewitness told KBMT that "he never saw the big rig driver hit the brakes, before swerving, hitting the median, making a complete 360 in the air, then crashing and exploding."

The witness, who said he has been driving big rigs for more than 20 years, called it the worst accident he's seen.

He told KBMT the most traumatizing part of the crash was seeing the 18-wheeler's passenger, Doiron, make his way out, still engulfed in flames.

The Texas DPS official said two Louisiana residents Joseph, 61, and Rhonda Knockum, 62, were in the other vehicle involved in the accident. They were taken to a local hospital.
