A high school student was struck in a 18-wheeler commercial vehicle accident in San Antonio, where witness say he was dragged along the road on Monday.
The 17-year-old junior from O'Connor High School in Helotes is now in critical conditions and suffered multiple injuries. He underwent surgery at University Hospital around noon, stated police and school officials. The student's name has not been released.
Police officials said that the student was on Leslie Rd. walking to school around 8:30 a.m. A friend was said to have dropped by to offer him a ride. That was when the student stepped out into the road and was hit by an 18
Authorities said the boy was walking to school along Leslie Rd. at around 8:30 a.m. when a friend stopped and offered him a ride. That is when an 18-wheel gravel truck hit the student when he stepped out into the road, said school district spokesman Pascual Gonzalez.
The truck that hit the teen attempted to swerve to avoid the boy, but only to have had crashed into another car, which jolted the truck back toward the student, said San Antonio Police Sgt. Javier Salazar.
The was said to have been dragged to up to 40 feet before the 18-wheeler truck had came to a full stop. The student was pinned under the truck's struck for a a period of time before rescue crews were able to free and retrieve him, Salazer said.
Many of the student's friends had witness the accident, including one of the teachers who quickly rushed into to help, Gonzalez said.
"They were quite traumatized by it," Gonzalez said.
School administrators and his parents were with him at the hospital, Gonzalez said. The truck driver was not charged.
"It looks like an unfortunate accident," Salazar said. The truck belonged to a business nearby the Leslie Rd where the student had been strucked.
An estimated 3,000 students attended the O'Connor High that was named after the retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Classes at the school continued as planned that Monday. Grief counselors were available for students, Gonzalez said.
