There’s nothing quite as unpredictable as Texas weather in the winter. One day it’s 65 degrees and sunny, and you wake up to ice and sleet the next. Driving in the Texas elements can be exceedingly difficult when unprepared. We don’t have snow tires or salt trucks getting to work at 5 a.m. like the northern states so it is imperative that as individuals, we are prepared with the right equipment to take care of ourselves on the road. Ice Scraper
Unless you want to sit in your car for 20 minutes waiting for the defroster to melt the ice on your windshield, you should invest in an ice scraper. When your windshield is covered in ice, your visibility is 100% impaired and doing the bare minimum with a credit card does not make things better. Getting an ice scraper with a handle long enough for you to reach the entire windshield is worth the effort and will save you time while keeping you safe.
A Bag of Sand
Texas is notorious for its lack of ice prevention on the roads. It may ice in the morning but there is no guarantee that the sand truck with be out fixing the road until two or three in the afternoon. Not all of us have the luxury of being able to wait out the storm. In a situation where you have slid on the ice and your car is stuck on the side of the road or in a ditch, a bag of sand can help your tires build traction to get out of the hole. Also, a bag of sand is heavy enough to increase the traction your car wheels gain when more weight is added to the car.
Jumper Cables
In the event that the temperature drops very quickly and your car is outside, the battery sometimes freezes and the car will not turn on. Having jumper cables on you at all times can save you from being stuck. All you need is another vehicle and you are back on the road. Most people would suggest having jumper cables at all times no matter the season, but in the winter especially, you don’t want to be stranded in the cold.
A Blanket
This may seem a little simple, but in the worst case scenario, you’ll be glad you have it. If all of your handy-dandy tools do not do the trick and you are stranded somewhere, having a blanket can keep you from freezing or frostbite. Sometimes it is inevitable for a long waiting period before help can get to your location so it is best to be prepared for any possible situation. Nothing will be able to keep you warm like a large blanket.
