St. Patrick’s Day Picnic

For a family-friendly celebration, take a picnic to Tyler State Park and enjoy a meal surrounded by greenery - a fitting color for the holiday.

It takes some planning to pack a great picnic. Here are some tips for enjoying a delicious, safe picnic:

  • To keep cold food safe, it should remain below 40°F; to keep hot food safe, it should remain at or above 140°F (these temperatures prevent the growth of harmful bacteria)
  • Keep coldest food on bottom of cooler (this can help keep the entire cooler cool)
  • Keep drinks in a separate cooler (so you’re not frequently opening the cooler with the food)
  • Don’t leave perishable food (like meats and dairy products) unrefrigerated for more than 2 hours
  • Find out if there’s a safe source of water at the park; if not, bring water bottles and moist towelettes for cleanup
  • Keep the lids on all of the containers you bring (to keep insects out)
  • If the ice has melted, throw the food out (cold water cannot keep the food at a safe temperature)

If you’re planning on packing a couple of Irish beers, don’t; it’s against Tyler State Park rules to drink or have alcohol within the park.

Celebrate the Day with a Dinner Out

If you and your loved ones wish to celebrate the day with a dinner out, Trip Advisor has a list of the top-rated restaurants in Tyler, Texas. From Italian and Mediterranean foods to burgers and classic Texas BBQ, there are plenty of options for you and your loved ones to celebrate the Irish holiday.

A common way to celebrate the holiday in the United States is to drink an array of Irish beers; while it may be a long-standing tradition, this form of celebration makes the roads much more dangerous. If you decide to consume alcohol while eating out, make sure you have a designated driver. On St. Patrick’s Day from 2009 to 2013, 276 people were killed in drunk-driving accidents.

If you have any doubt about getting home safely, call a cab. It’s much better to have to get your vehicle the next day than trying to drive home drunk.
