3 Reasons Why Speed Limits Are Important

Beginning today and running through Sunday (April 1 - 3), Beeville, Texas is hosting The Texas Mile. In this event, people from all over North America come to see how fast their vehicles can go on a 1 mile track with no speed limits.

The event allows drivers of many types of vehicles to participate in the event, including:

  • Motorcycles
  • Performance Street Cars
  • Race Cars
  • Land Speed Racers

Spectators of the event can enjoy the event in tents positioned at multiple places along the track, with concession stands and vendors all around. The racers have one mile to reach their top speed and then half  a mile to slow down and stop. They don’t have to worry about speed limits or tickets.

While this is an exhilarating event for many, it’s a great reminder to consider the importance of speed limits. Here are 3 reasons why following the speed limit is so important.

It’s the Law

The most obvious reason to follow speed limits is that it’s the law.

If you are caught driving over the speed limit, the offense can result in a traffic citation, a fine, license suspension, or even arrest (especially for people with multiple traffic citations).

Speed Limits Are Set to Protect Drivers

The speed limits on Texas roads are generally set by statute. The Texas traffic laws set the maximum speed drivers can go on Texas roadways, with the goal of selecting safe and reasonable limits.

Texas law requires speed limits on state roadways to be set at the state maximum, unless studies show the need to alter the speed limit. City governments and the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) are required to conduct traffic and engineering studies when setting speed limits on the state highway system.

While city governments have the authority to alter speed limits within the city, they don’t have the authority to set speed limits above 60 mph. With stoplights and school zones, speed limits on urban streets are much lower to protect both drivers and pedestrians.

Here are some general rules that Texas statutes have set for speed limits:

  • 30 mph in urban districts
  • 70 mph on state highways outside of urban districts
  • 60 mph on local highways outside of urban districts
  • 85 mph on rural freeways and interstates

Many areas in Texas have speed limits that differ from the speed limits listed above. City and state officials work to provide the safest speed limit for drivers on each road.

Faster Speed Requires More Stopping Time

Many factors determine the distance and time it takes for a vehicle to stop.

  • Vehicle type (car, SUV, truck, etc.)
  • Speed of the vehicle
  • Reaction time
  • Road Conditions

Speed limits help limit your speed, which in turn limits the amount of time it takes you to stop your vehicle. It’s also much easier for a driver to lose control of their vehicle when driving at faster speeds.

If you’re driving faster than the speed limit, you must keep in mind that the time and distance required to stop your vehicle increases.

The speed limits on roads throughout Texas serve as a guide and indicator of the road’s conditions. Speed limits are set with the main goal of keeping drivers and pedestrians safe.
