Toyota Recall

Toyota Motor Corp. announced that it will replace or reshape accelerator pedals on 5.3 million vehicles as a response to a sudden unintended acceleration problem that has caused more than a dozen fatal accidents, in addition to numerous serious injuries. It is the largest recall in the company’s history.

Vehicles affected by the recall are: 2007-2010 Camry, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2004-2009 Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Tundra, 2007-2010 Lexus ES 350, 2006 – 2010 Lexus IS 250 and IS 350; 2008-10 Highlander, 2009-10 Corolla, 2009-10 Venza, 2009-10 Matrix, and the 2009-10 Pontiac Vibe.

The car manufacturer will shorten the gas pedals on some models and reconfigure the floor surface beneath the pedal on some models to deal with ‘sticking accelerator’ issues. Problems have also been reported with the floor mats interfering with driver control of the accelerator.

The car company also announced it will install a brake override system on the Camrys, Avalons and Lexus’. The brake system overhaul is the result of talks between Toyota and the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Toyota has been the subject of an investigation into problems with unintended acceleration due to stuck gas pedals in some of these vehicles.
